the ads that won't stop

There was a closed question where someone had the same issue. Unfortunately it didn't go well, and an answer was not provided. A screen shot was requested but the user was unable to capture an image. I have an image of the problem in a screen shot. I don't know how to upload it to here though.

In the bottom left corner of my firefox browser, on all sites, ads appear. Ads for things like patriot4power, arrest records now public, this one food makes you fat, and so forth. I run Mcafee and Norton (yep - both alternatively) - so I'm fairly sure it isn't some kind of virus. I checked for Malware and it was clean also. Help?

It's very hard to complete homework, browse, fill in screens, etc. with ads popping up over and over that take up about 1/8th of the bottom left of the screen.

You can't attach a screenshot to the first post that starts a thread, but you can do that in subsequent replies.

Please update to the current Firefox 23 release.

  • Help > About Firefox

The Firefox 12 version that you currently run is no longer supported with security updates.

  • It is important to update Firefox and add-ons to the latest version to get all security fixes.

Sometimes a problem with Firefox may be a result of malware installed on your computer, that you may not be aware of.

You can try these free programs to scan for malware, which work with your existing antivirus software:

Microsoft Security Essentials is a good permanent antivirus for Windows 7/Vista/XP if you don't already have one.

Further information can be found in the Troubleshoot Firefox issues caused by malware article.

This might not be relevant to your problem, but it's hard to know... Can you review your Plugins list and figure out what this is:

"NPAPI plugin to host SDM ActiveX"

You can view your plugins using either:

  • orange Firefox button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons > Plugins category
  • Ctrl+Shift+a > Plugins category

If it doesn't jump out at you, my test page also will poll your plugins and view what it can see. You can use Ctrl+f to search in the page for SDM or ActiveX and copy/paste.
