Thunderbird 115 Garbling Messages

In the last month or two, Thunderbird has been intermittently garbling messages. Some of them look like content that was not decrypted, but others have message content from other messages in the body. I found a similar post for this issue in Thunderbird 102, but it has been archived without a solution confirmed.

I just upgraded from 115.5.1 to 115.6.1. This did not fix the garbled messages, but I cannot yet report if new messages are being garbled. I also disabled all themes and extensions (although troubleshooting info shows others not manageable in "Manage Your Extensions") when this began happening. I am connecting to IMAP servers managed by Google, and I am on Windows 11 Home. The garbled content happens always with messages originating from Basecamp, although the mishmash of messages fuses content from Basecamp messages with messages from other senders such as Blackbaud.

The message content remains in tact on Google Mail in the web browser interface. Moving the message from the inbox to another folder via the web browser interface and then moving it back to the inbox via the same interface restores the content.

I cannot provide a full example because of the potential to expose confidential information in content that might be decoded by someone else, but attached is a partial example of what I see. Note the subject in the list view versus the lack of subject in the message header and the completely different subject in the message body.

In the last month or two, Thunderbird has been intermittently garbling messages. Some of them look like content that was not decrypted, but others have message content from other messages in the body. I found a similar post for this issue in Thunderbird 102, but it has been archived without a solution confirmed. I just upgraded from 115.5.1 to 115.6.1. This did not fix the garbled messages, but I cannot yet report if new messages are being garbled. I also disabled all themes and extensions (although troubleshooting info shows others not manageable in "Manage Your Extensions") when this began happening. I am connecting to IMAP servers managed by Google, and I am on Windows 11 Home. The garbled content happens always with messages originating from Basecamp, although the mishmash of messages fuses content from Basecamp messages with messages from other senders such as Blackbaud. The message content remains in tact on Google Mail in the web browser interface. Moving the message from the inbox to another folder via the web browser interface and then moving it back to the inbox via the same interface restores the content. I cannot provide a full example because of the potential to expose confidential information in content that might be decoded by someone else, but attached is a partial example of what I see. Right click the folder, select properties and then the repair button should fix the layout.

I am guessing the problem may be caused by the XNote++ extension

Generally I blame antivirus or other products that change files on the fly, things like cloud backups and streaming backups or storage of the profile folders on a remote server. But there is a background number of folk at the moment having issues, and the lowish numbers indicate either a less popular antivirus (that is not what defender is) but also XNote++ writes to the same index file Thunderbird uses to get the location of the email in the mail store to display it.

If possible it would be good if you disabled it for a time and see if it is the cause. I do not see anything in the open issues on their web site https://github.com/xnotepp/xnote/issues However that only means no one has raised an issue, and given the type of addon XNote is, I would think most folk would struggle without it once they use it. So few will run without it long enough to actually work out it has an issue.

Thanks @Matt! I will try repairing the folder if this happens again. Regarding XNote++, I disabled it several months ago when the issue first surfaced, and that did not resolve the problem. The troubleshooting log shows false for this extension, which I believe references the enabled status. Does it appear to be enabled to you based on the log? If so, I might have to uninstall it altogether, as it shows as disabled in add-ons manager.
