Thunderbird keeps raising a messageBox asking if I want to automatically purge deleted e-mails. I do not. And - even though I have emptied the trash - it claims 266MB would be saved
Let me know how to eliminate this

I've had the conversation with other users. Nothing personal, but I'm only going to say this once.
The prompt you are seeing has NOTHING to do with trash. And does NOT delete messages.
It is routine maintenance to free up space vacated by messages moving to other locations. You can't see what's in that space, nor can you recover messages in that space.
If you don't allow it to free the space then your performance will eventually suffer and you will be using more disk space than is necessary. You avoid that by marking the checkbox agreeing to automatic operation and clicking Proceed. After doing that if the prompt doesn't stop then that is a bug.

Note - Version 91 comes out in several weeks, in which the language of the compact dialog has been greatly improved. When you install version 91, if compact causes problems, please create a new support topic.
