unrecognised IMAP4 command when accessing BT IMAP email server
just started to happen today keep getting the message ........unrecognised IMAP4 command ..........at random when accessing BT mail server can recieve ok and send but often nothing is passed to sent folder which is a real pain...have reinstalled thunderbird checked all settings with bt even phoned bt who said its not them and to contact thunderbird but its their servers that are not recognizing a IMAP4 command so i think its them but cant prove it others seem to be getting the same problem now
Chosen solution
Update as of this morning thunderbird is working without errors I have not updated thunderbird or changed anything but did post many comments on BT forum yesterday now its back working again without changing anything so I think that means thunderbird was not responsible but it seems BT may have taken notice and changed something at the servers ….we will see

It would seem you are not alone, several people are reporting this same issue on the bt community website. https://community.bt.com/t5/Email/Unrecognised-IMAP4-command/td-p/1959282
Please double check settings:
server name: mail.btinternet.com for both IMAP & SMTP servers.
Imap Incoming Port: 993
SMTP Port: 465
Connection Security for both is : SSL/TLS
Authentication Method for both is 'Normal Password'
Username for both is full email address.
Check and reselect to force a resave: Menu icon >Options >Advanced> 'Network & Disc Space' tab click connection 'Settings' button check " Use System Proxy Settings" is selected and then click OK.
If all so far seems ok then check this is not relelated to a CalDav issue.
Menu icon > Options > Advanced > 'General' tab
click on 'Config Editor' button
It will say be careful :)
In search type : cookie look for this line: network.cookie.same-site.enabled double click on that line to toggle the 'True' to a 'False' close window - top right x click on 'OK' Restart Thunderbird.
I'm with BT and have the last setting set to true, but I'm not using Imap nor using bt contacts, so have not experienced the IMAP4 issue.
Please report back on results.
did all as instructed still the same but did notice in network cookie the prefsMigrated was showing as modified to true....... also it seems to throw the error when you first click on any folder eg TRASH OR SENT then second time you click on folder it may not throw error HOWEVER when you send an email it throws the error un reqognised imap4 command about the sent folder and as a result you dont get a saved copy which is bloody annoying as you dont know if its sent or not and it seems gmail account dosnt seem to do it and it seems random sometimes it works ok
