when I click on a link in a thunderbird email my PC hangs for a couple of minutes

I've been using Thunderbird (ver 60.7.2) for years, but in the last week or so every time I click on a hyperlink my whole PC hangs for 2-3 minutes. Then finally the link opens up in my browser (Firefox, ver 68.0). This never happened before. This has happened with links sent by several senders (including myself) and going to different web sites. Needless to say I've rebooted my PC, restarted both Firefox and Thunderbird, but it still continues to occur. And help would be appreciated.

What is the security/AV program on your computer?

If you run Windows in safe mode, does the problem remain?

FYI, I was about to try this when a colleague suggested installing the newest version of windows 10 (ver 1903. I had been at 1806 I believe). He noted that this is better than the incremental updates that come each month. While it took nearly an hour to download and install it seems to have fixed the problem.
