I've been sending emails to a friend for a few years using Thunderbird with no problem. He's now saying that the text in the emails he receives has suddenly become fragmented. See example text below...

Personally, I dread the thought of sheltered accommodation and would prefer to expire peacefully before that happened, but of course we can never be sure how it will end, Mark. Do you mean the kids took the loot?! I wonder why these throat growths occurred in such numbers? - Her surgeon was never convinced he'd removed all of the first tumour and he was proved right eventually.

He says I'm the only sender whose emails this happens to. What could be the problem please?

Apologies for raising this question again but no one seems to be able to provide an answer and the problem is ongoing. His email address is a @btinternet.com address and he still says it's still only messages he receives from my @blueyonder.co.uk address that arrive like this. This is a copy of the latest one he received from me, again with long gaps between words, which appear to be a uniform 10 spaces long -

' Yes, Thomas Cook had a good run and there's just too much cheap competition out there. My daughter's due back from Barcelona today. She didn't say who she was flying with!

Didn't wake up until 10am but didn't go to bed until 2.30 due to website work (about time!). Was due to go to the hospital today for my chest x-ray but might leave it until after my ECG and blood tests tomorrow. An endoscopy is in the pipeline, too but I'll have to wait for an appointment confirmation for that. '

Thanks in anticipation, Mark

If he is the only recipient seeing this from you and no one else is, then it is more likely the problem is at end. But it is worth running through a few checks.

Are you composing in HTML or Plain Text ? Are you sending in both Plain Text and HTML ? check here: Menu icon > Options > Options > Composition > 'General' tab click on 'Send Options' button Have you selected 'Send the message in both plain text and HTML' ?

Is the recipient listed under 'HTML domains' or 'Plain Text domains' ? click all the 'Ok' s

Is the recipient listed in your address book(s) ? select 'Address Book' Check: Click on contact to open the edit contact window. What is selected : 'Prefers to receive messages formatted as' Suggest leave as 'unknown' unless they specifically want to receive in a particular format.

If you are ok with this: Send an email to me and 'attach' a copy of the original email you sent (drag and drop sent email into the 'Attachment ' area) which looked squiffy and I'll check the source code. Email address is writtten phontically to avoid spam bots so when I say 'at' it means '@' and 'dot' is full stop/period. Email : mail at anje dot co dot uk

Thank you for your advice Toad-Hall.

As my friend is elderly and somewhat deaf it's been difficult to explain what he needs to check at his end.

In the end, I contacted BT on his behalf and was advised to tell him to update and/or change his browser. The problem only seems to occur when he picks up my Emails directly from BT's website but not if he picks them up using Outlook, which he prefers not to do for some reason, and it's only his @bt.com address that's affected. the problem doesn't occur with his @hotmail address.

As of yet, I don't know whether he's done as I told him..

I did play around with my own settings just in case but it made no difference. Originally I was composing in Plain Text and HTML and I had checked Send the message in both Plain Text and HTML so I changed them and as it made no difference I've now reverted to checking 'Send messages as plain text if possible'.

I haven't listed him as an HTML or a Plain Text domain.

The recipient is listed in my address books.

Have I done correctly with my own settings?

Thanks, Mark
