In the main Thunderbird window when I have “inbox” highlighted, it shows me, obviously all the emails in the inbox, but when I click on one of them, it also takes up a lot of room with the message id, reply to id, and the references id. Each of these take up one line. My question is how do I get rid of these id’s?

Chosen solution

Click on the View menu with the mouse or press Alt+V on the keyboard, move down to the entry that says Headers and change the selection to Normal. If you wish to conserve even more space, return there again and enable the setting for Compact.
