Hi everyone,

Unfortunately, a malware destroyed (i.e. deleted) 80% of the content of my Program Files (on my D: drive), including the required files to Firefox to function properly, so it is not opening at all (each time I try to open FF, I get a "missing XPCOM" error message).

I started to back-up my files, which include the bookmarks of FF, among others. So, here is my issue.

I don't have any "places.sqlite" file in my FF profile in the APPDATA%\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\ profile.default (my user folder is on my SSD drive c: with my OS, and this drive have not been infected so far).

On the other hand, I have a "places.sqlite" file in my Thunderbird profile.

- So, it is normal that I don't have the bookmark file in my FF profile?

- Does the FF places.sqlite is the same one than the Thunderbird one (which could explain why I don't have that file in my FF profile)?

- If I'm just copy/paste the whole FF profile folder, do I'll get back my bookmark automatically?

Thanks for your help folks!

Regards

EDIT: to avoid the question, yes I can see hidden files and folders (option is already check marked).

No it's not normal that it's missing. You can still recover bookmarks although places.sqlite holds all favicons. Go to hamburger menu->Library->Bookmarks and at the very bottom click on Show all Bookmarks. Or just press Ctrl+Shift+B. Library window should open up. There is a button Import and Backup, click on that. Go to restore menu, it will show all the backup bookmarks.

When it comes to malware, if your profile gets destroyed I would recommend copying current profile and create a new one. All backup bookmarks are in your profile folder\bookmarkbackups

Thanks for your reply kroppy. Unfortunately, as mentioned in the OP, I can't open FF. I always got a "missing XPCOM" error message. The Malware have deleted a lot files in the Program Files/Firefox folder.

At least, my FF profile (default C:) was not stored on the same drive than the FF one (on my second drive, E:).

On the other hand, I don't have any "bookmarkbackups" in my user folder neither (by user folder I mean: %appdata%\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\ profile.default ).

Note that best is to do a full clean reinstall of Firefox in cases like this and make sure to remove the Firefox Firefox program folder.

  • (64-bit Firefox) "C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\"
  • (32-bit Firefox) "C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\"

You can find the full version of the current Firefox release (60.0) in all languages and all operating systems here:

Firefox always creates its profile folder on the system drive although you can specify a dedicated folder on another drive to be used as the profile folder by using the "Choose folder" button in the Profile Manager. This should be an empty folder that doesn't have any other files in it.

  • %AppData%\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\<profile>\

Is there only one profile in that location and isn't there an "Old Firefox Data" folder on the desktop as well? What files are still left in it?
