I cannot find anything helpful anywhere. I was unable to change my password at outlook, their instructions showed non existant menus. So I created a new password for my msn account. Well I try to get new mail, I am prompted by TB to enter the password. This is always rejects. I tried to open setting and replace the password, but that is not possible. I don't know anything about imap or pop, so I am reluctant to change that. Thunderbird has worked fine for several years, then somebody had to change is and make it better, and now it doesn't work. What does work is all different looking and I am just hoping it does what I think it is supposed to do, but I am not confident.

It may come as a surprise, but not all computer users are younger than millenials. What may be obvious to some 19 year old is impossibly obscure.

Can you login to your account via webmail (i.e. using a web browser)?

I can only access my outlook account via the outlook website. I was unable to changel my password there, and had to reset the password for the entire MSN experience. Alhough I could change the gmail account passowrd with TB, it is the only one. I could not find anywhere in the TB settings to either enter or change a password.

I don't know the difference between imap and pop 3. I just want things to work, like a Honda.

So then you do have a working password.

I am prompted by TB to enter the password.

Use the previously confirmed password when prompted by Thunderbird.

I was unable to changel my password there, and had to reset the password for the entire MSN experience.

I have no idea what that means, but it has got nothing to do with Thunderbird.

Your Gmail password is not related to your MSN password, so this is irrelevant.

I could not find anywhere in the TB settings to either enter or change a password.

Thunderbird will prompt you for the password if it's needed. You can tell Thunderbird to remember that password by checking the option in the prompt pop-up.

As of Thunderbird 45 you can also edit account passwords Thunderbird has remembered.

At the top right of the Thunderbird window, click the menu button > Options > Security > Passwords tab > Saved Passwords > Show Passwords

Verify whether the password Thunderbird has remembered is the same one as you verified via webmail.

If not, right-click the password entry - Edit Password. Enter the correct one and close out.

It is clear what you think of my mental capacity. I did try all the things I sais I did.

I would never have found the password tab on my own, So thanks for that. That tab showed the password that has been in place for several years, even before I developed the dementia of which you suspect. I entered that password when prompted no less that 6 times. When that did not work, the only think I could think of was to reset the password at its source, which I did. I then tried entering that when prompted, again 6 or 7 times.

Following your instructions, I found the correct password associated with the msn account, but that password is no longer valid, so I removed it.

No I am left with no way to enter a password.

I apologize for being too stupid to use this product, but I cannot change that. I can only long for the day when using my computer is as simply and straight forward as driving a car in Rome

I have read that Outlook have recently changed their email protocol from POP to IMAP. That's a change by your email provider, not by Thunderbird, as you realise. A number of Outlook users have therefore set up new IMAP accounts. If you don't want to do that (and I understand why not), apparently you have to log into your account via the Outlook website and click something to 'enable POP'. It seems crazy and tiresome to have to 'enable' something that you've used for years, but that's my undertanding of what you have to do. Unfortunately I don't have an Outlook account myself so I can't tell you exactly where on the website you will find the setting. Maybe someone else in this forum can help you with that, or you could log into the website and poke around in a 'help' or 'settings' menu if there is one.

I tried everything you said. Even tried to open a new account; password is rejected every time. I have screen shots of every step, and would happily send them along if it helps, but even though I can see the screen shots on my computer, the little choose file box under this message does no recognize these.

to amanchester man. That at least is something to go on. I have no great desire to know the difference between imap and pop. I have had the same email address since the last century, and I don't want to start all over again. I will see if I can figure this out. If I do I will let you know.

well what do you know. Setting up a new account in TB did the trick. I just had to wait 15 minutes.

Now I have two @msn.com accounts, one that ends on April 29, and one that begins where the old one left until now.

Thanks for the attempts at helping, appreciated even if ineffective.
