I set winRegisterApplicationRestart to false. Firefox doesn't appear in the task manager startup programs list. There is no link to firefox in the startup folder. Nevertheless, firefox runs itself when I log on. How can I make it stop?

What opens in the browser? Your normal home page?

Firefox starts automatically when I restart Windows {web link}

It restores my previous session, which is what I have told firefox to do whenever it starts.

I am on windows and have already followed the instructions on that page, as you can see in my screenshot.

It only happens some of the time.

Are you doing a regular shutdown of Firefox before shutting down Windows? I mean using the menu, either:

  • "3-bar" menu button > Exit
  • (menu bar) File > Exit

Does any extra page open? One possible explanation for your default browser opening without you directing it to open is if there is a task spawned by the OS or another application to open a URL.

Usually I just let windows shutdown kill the process.

I have not noticed any extra page, but this still seems like a likely explanation.

If Firefox was still running when you shutdown Windows then Firefox may crash resulting in restoring next time you start Firefox.

Could that also cause Firefox to open itself on startup?

It is certainly possible that shutting down windows with firefox running is part of the cause.

However, I don't see any of the "firefox crashed" type messages when it happens, it restores my tabs as if it had been shut down properly.

In any case, my tabs being restored is not unusual. I have Firefox set to restore my tabs whenever it opens.

What is unusual is Firefox running itself as soon as I log in.

Firefox keeps a file of the currently open windows/tabs.
This file is removed when the browser closes.

If the file is there when Firefox opens, it assumes it crashed and restores the last session.

Suggestion: Close the browser before shutting down the computer.

Does it check if the file is there on login and start if it is?

Again, the issue is that Firefox starts itself on log in without permission.

Only when Firefox opens. Not the computer.

I'm recently having the same issue, YES I shut down firefox just like I have done for years with no problems. And I have gone into advance setting and changed the one to FALSE & still it starts up all by its self. It is not in my computer start up folder. There must of been a windows or firefox update to cause this, because it has never happened before.
