You need to sort this out with the previous owners of the address and whoever provides it to you. It sounds as if the previous owner hasn't relinquished the email account. You can probably change its password to stop the previous owner from using the email account/address, but you can't stop people emailing to it. If the Ditzlers (Who are they? Why do you think we should know them?) have stopped using an address then it's up to them to notify their correspondents of a new address.

An email address is unique; it can only resolve to one account. If you think this address has been sold to you and the previous owners think it's still theirs, then you need to resolve that between you. You can't both use the same address and expect privacy.

Thunderbird is just an email client. It just fetches what arrives in your Inbox. It has no say in who owns an account.
