As you can see, this problem is evolving. Now, I can download Firefox (thanks to Amistree -- sorry, I know that spelling is wrong) but once I close Firefox, I cannot re-open it. I get that same Google 404 error message. So I need to keep downloading Firefox. I will say that, once downloaded, I do have all my tabs, ext. still in place. This is so weird!

Thanks for any help anyone can suggest.

Thank you, but, as it turns out, the problem was with my DSL internet connection. So I didn't try your suggestion and, therefore, cannot tell whether it was helpful. I will say, with gratitude, that what you wrote made sense and I could have followed the steps had I needed to.

Hello,

Certain Firefox problems can be solved by performing a Clean reinstall. This means you remove Firefox program files and then reinstall Firefox. Please follow these steps:

Note: You might want to print these steps or view them in another browser.

  1. Download the latest Desktop version of Firefox from http://www.mozilla.org and save the setup file to your computer.
  2. After the download finishes, close all Firefox windows (click Exit from the Firefox or File menu).
  3. Delete the Firefox installation folder, which is located in one of these locations, by default:
    • Windows:
      • C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox
      • C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox
    • Mac: Delete Firefox from the Applications folder.
    • Linux: If you installed Firefox with the distro-based package manager, you should use the same way to uninstall it - see Install Firefox on Linux. If you downloaded and installed the binary package from the Firefox download page, simply remove the folder firefox in your home directory.
  4. Now, go ahead and reinstall Firefox:
    1. Double-click the downloaded installation file and go through the steps of the installation wizard.
    2. Once the wizard is finished, choose to directly open Firefox after clicking the Finish button.

Please report back to see if this helped you!

Thank you.

Amitshree:

I thought you would be interested in how I solved the problem above. My issue having trouble connecting with Firefox only started after I made a change in my internet connection. Previously I had a DSL connection through my phone line, with a wired connection to the computer. For irrelevant reasons, I had set up a WiFi -- wireless connection -- through the same internet service. When I disabled the WiFi and went back to the old wire-connection the problem was solved!
I don't understand this but I think it important, perhaps, for you guys at Mozilla to know (it was a Google 404 error message that revealed the problem; why could Google interfere with my connection to Firefox?)

This did nothing to correct the problem. I do believe it's a Google problem but how in the world do I get them to help me? It isn't my internet as I've had the same internet provider for 12 years now and they say it isn't their problem. I can log in on Safari but not Firefox and I prefer Firefox. Any other suggestions?
