I've just installed Firefox & I can open Internet Explorer with it and separately. i want to get rid of IE which was installed earlier. Can I do it without harming my IE?

Not really sure what you are asking, or why

  1. removal of a desktop icon for an earlier version of IE
  2. removal of IE itself

I would never consider removing IE from my system, even though I had removed all IE desktop icons, and from Start Menu, etc. I did put one back somewhere. That is not to say that I don;t use IE -- it's just that if I do use IE, I launch it from Firefox through the "Launchy" extension so I am looking at the same page in two browsers.

There are some people who remove IE, which can be done, because Windows updates no longer use IE. IE has been reduced to an interface to features builtin to the Windows Operating System.

You may be referring to an extension that uses the IE engine, that part is not part of Firefox it is either invoking from the system like IE or is invoking IE.

If you have a major problem with a browser what are you going to do. Basically

  1. fix the problem, or
  2. use something else
