after downloading new version, not prompted to drag icon > Application folder; what do I do with old one in ap folder and the dock?

I had firefox 3.5.16 installed 12/2009, but never used. I started using it 8/16/11. While trying to play a game on Yahoo (typing in "confirmation" code), firefox crashed. After sending the crash info to firefox, I restarted the browser and a window opened suggesting that I download the latest version. I did this, but was never prompted to save the icon in the application folder. There was no icon (other than the one I already had in my dock
