what has become of the arrow to return to the previous page?

Yesterday firefox was as I knew it - today it's totally changed and far less convenient. The worst problem is that I keep reaching for the back arrow - and it's not there. How can I restore it (or find it)? I would like a simple comprehensible answer as I am no great expert at computer language, and am really annoyed that the programme I was using with ease and efficiency has become so much more complicated.

You can get the drop down list by either right-clicking on the back/forward buttons, or holding down the left button until the list appears.

If you want the drop-down arrow you can add it with the Back/forward dropmarker add-on - https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/backforward-dropmarker

I attempted to install this add-on, and was told I had to restart the computer to complete the installation, but when I clicked on the restart button the installation page reappeared, and the computer didn't restart. I restarted it in the usual way, but still haven't got my forwrd-backward arrows - AND I MISS THEM. I tried several times with the same non-result. If this carries on I'll have to abandon firefox.

You don't need to restart your computer to complete the installation of Firefox add-ons, all you need to do is to restart Firefox using the provided restart button or close Firefox and re-open it.
