can't organize, edit, sort, or save bookmarks. How do I fix this?

Wwhen I click on view to view bookmarks in the sidebar, nothing appears. When I click to organize bookmarks, nothing shows in the Library window. Some bookmarks that were imported from Internet explorer later disappeared from Firefox list. I have reinstalled Firefox and that didn't help. What else can I try?
