when opening up .wmv files from a web page i am always prompted with the pop up that asks what to do with this file.

I have "Open with WMP (default)" selected and also have "Do this automatically for files like this selected." So why doesn't firefox simply do this automatically? This only happens with .wmv extensions.

You may have created that automatic action for the wrong MIME type.
