Just recently, I've found that whenever I delete an email, I get a message pop up...

The folder 'Inbox on Abc' cannot be compacted because another operation is in progress. Please try again later.

I've never noticed this before, but have had it a lot lately.

Anyone any idea why, and if there's anything I can do to avoid it. It's pretty annoying.

Actually, I just realised I get this when archiving as well, not just deleting.

Is this version 102.2.0 ?

It was on 101.1.xx. I just came back from holiday and upgraded to 102.2, so we'll see what happens.
