Open pdf in new tab not new window

When I open a pdf with Firefox from my computer (say from my desktop) it always opens a new window instead of just opening as a tab in the already-opened-firefox window. This gets very disorganized when I want to open multiple pdfs since every pdf opens a new window. How could I change this setting? I am using a mac.
