Just downloaded Firefox Quantum and am running some comparisons with Chrome. FF 56.0 and earlier used to always load the CPU a little even when idle - a little disappointed to see that Quantum does the same. Scenario (in both FF and Chrome 62.0):

  • Single tab open
  • Open Google home page
  • Search for "Firefox Quantum"
  • Check CPU usage using "top" (Ubuntu 16.04 on an i7 laptop with 8GB RAM) - FF (WebContent) usage varies between 4-10% (mostly around 5-6%), while Chrome is below 0.1%

On another web app that we run, FF (56.0 and earlier as well as Quantum) uses around 30% CPU, while Chrome is at under 10%.
