Is that used by Firefox, or is it used by other programs??

Firefox history shows pages and downloads, and you can view those in the Library dialog (Ctrl+Shift+h, or History menu > Show All History).

Firefox history does not track the innumerable elements called from pages, such as external scripts and style sheets, images, videos, etc. Some would be listed in Firefox's cache page (type or paste about:cache into the address bar and press Enter). But otherwise, there might not be anything on your computer recording that level of detail.
