Previous session was not saved - how to get it back?

more options

A common thing I've done is leave 20+ tabs open throughout the time I use FireFox, then close and leave them there. Every time I open FireFox, it has worked fine. Just now, I opened FireFox literally a few seconds after closing it and my session didn't restore. Some of these tabs have been there for MONTHS, there's no way of rooting through my history to find them. How do I get my session back?

Edit: Fortunately, I got my previous session back. Why would it not restore? I did nothing differently.
