On Windows 8 it happens periodically. I have a docking station at home and one at work, with different geometry (monitor configurations). When standing by the computer in one dock (work) and docking and awaking it at the other (home), firefox loses it's maximize/minimize/close buttons. The top bar seems to have some sort of transparency when maximized, and goes black when the window is restored (not maximized). I can go back and forth by double clicking the place where these three buttons are supposed to be, but I cannot close the application from there, so I have to either type Alt-Space and close or Alt-F4 or close it from the task bar/task manager.

It works again if I close and open firefox.

I know this sounds more like an annoying complaint. But I just wanted to report this has been happening for multiple versions of Firefox (I'm currently running v. 31.0). Sometimes it happens by just undocking the laptop.

Thanks in advance for your attention and help.

PS: When this happens the transparency doesn't let the user read clearly the tabs. And when the window size is restored, the black background hides the text on the tabs.

You can try to disable hardware acceleration in Firefox.

  • Tools > Options > Advanced > General > Browsing: "Use hardware acceleration when available"

You need to close and restart Firefox after toggling this setting.

You can try a different Windows theme to see if there is one that works better.

I've been running with that option disabled. And I'm still seeing this issue.

Thanks.

I disabled use hard ware acceleration and the buttons are back for now...but what caused this?...anyways thanks for the support.
