I frequently have firefox running for long periods of times, often days. Thus clearing cookies on exit is a nice idea but not really cutting it. In particular for social media and other sites which can be a bit nefarious.

It would be a great feature if it was possible to control cookie behavior by tab and site. So for instance, you could have a preference 'delete cookies set by open tabs when they are closed'. That might be too agressive for some people so would also suggest the ability to tag within the cookie privacy settings specific sites for which this action applies. Thus a user could tag a handful of the worst offenders to be cleaned out whenever the tab they are using is closed. Of course, that pref would need to survive any 'delete all cookies' operation so as not to have to set it every time.

Obviously, this is a feature request. If there is a better place for those, I was unable to find.

A possibility would be to open such a link in a Private Browsing mode window. A Private Browsing mode window/tab has a separate set of cookies that are shared among all PB mode tabs, so if you close all PB mode windows and open a new PB mode window then you get a new set of cookies.

You can use an extension to get Private Browsing mode support per tab.

The private windows get to be an annoyance after awhile. I do use them from time to time but I already have enough windows open most days...

You should try this extension - Cookies self-destruct on closing tab, closing browser or never -

Works well for me and easy to set up.

'Later additional comment' It works well with Do Not Track Me which blocks tracking cookies -

Yes, thats pretty much what I am looking for. I'll give it a go but the developer is no longer maintaining and says it is deprecated so its life may be short. But this functionality should be enabled in the base build as a cookie option setting.

I sympathize with your concern to remove cookies from social networking. But I would also encourage you, for your own protection, to close the browser frequently, never leave it unattended for hours, and to learn to enter your banking, credit card, etc. passwords instead of leaving them for easy lookup by anyone who writes a script on your computer.

Yes, it's a bit more work, but soooooo much more secure, both for your identity, your money, and your computer health. Also, install and learn to use NoScript addon. Running on Firefox, it's the best thing since sliced bread!

'Beezle' Your response came as quite a shock; when an extension is working well you have no reason to go to the website. I hope someone picks it up or, as you say, Firefox adopts it in the base build. There are cookie manager extensions galore and someone else may suggest one that meets your needs. I totally agree with the comment from slswyoming about closing your browser more frequently. As a safety measure, you could bookmark open tabs that you need into folders on your Bookmarks Toolbar.
