How do I check if I have this Freecorder program that crashes Firefox...mind you, mine not only crashes, it reboots.

I can't give you an error message, as cptr just reboots every time I use Firefox. I uninstalled it and reinstalled it. For a while, I could use the Safe Money mode, but somehow, after about a month, it also crashes and reboots. If I don't use Firefox, it does not reboot. Problem is, I love Firefox, and am forced to use Microsoft edge. Can't pinpoint exact timing, but it was about 2 months ago this started...and may be correlated to Win10 update, but not sure when I made this change. I delayed it due to fears of problems and having to restore stuff...so it wasn't for about 2 months from its release. Have also tried full scans on Kaspersky and Malwarebytes.

The Freecorder program by Applian Technologies would appear in the Windows Control Panel, Uninstall a Program (I'm not sure of the easiest way to access that on Windows 10) where you could look for that and any other Applian programs and, if appropriate remove it/them.

But in past threads, I don't think the Freecorder-related crash was severe enough to crash Windows, so there might be a different problem. Could you scan for malware and other suspicious programs with some additional tools? Our support article lists a number of free cleaning programs that should not require any payment to complete the job. (If you find one requiring payment, skip it and move on to the next one.)

Troubleshoot Firefox issues caused by malware

Once you are confident your system is clean, please:

Clean Reinstall

We use this name, but it's not about removing your settings, it's about making sure the program files are clean (no inconsistent or alien code files). As described below, this process does not disturb your existing settings. Do NOT uninstall Firefox, that's not needed.

(A) Download a fresh installer for Firefox 45.0 from https://www.mozilla.org/firefox/all/ to a convenient location. (Scroll down to your preferred language.) For maximum plugin compatibility, choose the 32-bit version.

(B) Exit out of Firefox (if applicable).

(C) Rename the program folder as follows:

(32-bit Firefox on 64-bit Windows)

C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox

to

C:\Program Files (x86)\OldFirefox

(Other systems)

C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox

to

C:\Program Files\OldFirefox

(D) Run the installer you downloaded in step (A). It should automatically connect to your existing settings.

Any improvement in stability?

Note: Some plugins may exist only in that OldFirefox folder. If something essential is missing, look in these folders, but for obvious reasons, don't just copy everything over:

  • \OldFirefox\Plugins
  • \OldFirefox\browser\plugins

If that doesn't help, try the following three-minute experiment:

Create a new Firefox profile

A new profile will have your system-installed plugins (e.g., Flash) and extensions (e.g., security suite toolbars), but no themes, other extensions, or other customizations. It also should have completely fresh settings databases and a fresh cache folder.

Exit Firefox and start up in the Profile Manager: in the Windows Run dialog (windows key + R) or system search box, type or paste the following and press Enter to run it:

firefox.exe -P

Don't delete anything here!

Any time you want to switch profiles, exit Firefox and return to this dialog.

Click the Create Profile button, assign a name like TEST2016, and skip the option to relocate the profile folder. After creating the profile, select it and start Firefox in that profile.

More stable?

When returning to the Profile Manager, you might be tempted to use the Delete Profile button. But... it's a bit too easy to accidentally delete your "real" profile, so I recommend resisting the temptation. If you do want to clean up later, I suggest making a backup of all your profiles first in case something were to go wrong.

Changing file names to OldFirefox and downloading again (clean reinstall) was a success! Thanks for your help!
