Help please: I am unable to enter new events into my calendar - getting the message: An error occurred when writing to the calendar

Two issues are probably linked: I am using a macbook air with 10.10.3 I have several different calendars which all imported fine when I set up Thunderbird (38.0.1) and Lightening. However, when I get sent invitations they don't save into the calendar, and when I put in a new event, I get the error above: An error occurred when writing to the calendar. It makes no difference whether its the caldav calendar that I am subscribed to or any of my icloud calendars. Both get errors.

This is essentially making my lightening calendar useless as it's not updating/syncing from the source or allowing me to save to it manually.

Any help gratefully received.
