How do I migrate my settings from an older version of Firefox to a new machine?

I am using Windows XP as many here know. However I finally bought a windows 7 pro laptop, which is going to arrive in a few days, and I want to move all my old settings and the like over to it. I am using (largely due to storage space concerns at this point, though I am still not a fan of the Australis interface)) Firefox 28 on the old machine, so this is the version I want to migrate over, at which point I'll probably grab the ESR for version 31 (or whatever the current ESR is.) However I don't believe sync would work to make the change over as this is an older version of the system rather than the current version. Can anyone help?

Marc7: I think what you are looking for can be covered in profiles. A Firefox profile saves your passwords, settings, and bookmarks and can be transferred out and into firefox. For additional information, please see this support article. If you have any questions, please feel free to reply.

Have a great day!!

Note that the ESR version will change from ESR 31 to ESR 38 (ESR 38 is already available). Firefox 31.7.0/38.0.1 ESR:

Note that best is to be cautious when you transfer data from an older OS or data from an older Firefox version to the current release. Best is to only copy database files you really need and reinstall extensions and redo Options/Preferences settings and toolbar customizations.

Firefox 28 uses the old Sync version, so you can't sync between that version and the Sync version used in current releases.

Out of curiosity, could I do a Sync between two Firefox 28s, if I set up Sync on my old machine and then set it up on the new one via another 28 on the 7 machine?

I assume that this would be possible if you are able to connect both devices to the same Sync account.

You can always transfer files to another computer by copying the files to another computer to to a profile folder that is used by a recent Firefox version.

How do I set up a sync account? I know of Sync, but up until now, I've never had the need to use it, so I'm not sure how to set it up.
