One of the moderators recently posted a solution to this problem, which only began for me with Thunderbird v38.5.1 in early January, 2016, by saying "Have antivirus software? Turn it off." While that did work, it's not really a solution, is it? I use AVG AntiVirus FREE software (on my Windows 7 computer) and found that disabling just the E-mail Protection feature was not sufficient; I had to temporarily disable the whole thing to get e-mail to download. Additionally, the symptom was limited to one of four e-mail accounts. Since nobody wants to run without antivirus or have to disable it, download e-mail, then enable it again, I am hoping that support folks can take a deeper look at this problem and come up with a true solution.
