How can I prevent Thunderbird from shifting the focus away from the message list panel unless I actually click somewhere else?

This problem has just started happening to me since the last update (v 31.7.0, Win Vista) but it was very well described over a year ago for v 24.3.0 on BSD at https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1023239. As for as I can tell it has not been answered.
