Profile folder has become much larger since March

I have been backing up my Firefox profile folder regularly every three months, and it has gone from about 50 megs back in March to 350 megs now in June, and yes I did clear the cache before backup. Has the structure of the FF cache changed that much? My profile folder has several folders with cache in their names that seem to be the culprit. Do I really need to back them up?

I just really want to backup my settings, bookmarks, and extensions.

Your browser cache usually is located under a different path. By default, the main folder is under:

C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\

and the cache folder is under:

C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\

If you have cache folders in your mail profile folder, they could contain add-on data. Also, if you tried any beta/aurora versions of Firefox, you might have accumulated some page thumbnails (displayed on about:newtab) in your main profile folder. However, currently released versions store those images in the cache.
