When firefox 61 is started from a shell I see the error: ...firefox/libxul.so: undefined symbol: dbus_validate_bus_name

The OS is Ubuntu 12.04 (32-bit) which has dbus 1.4.18 installed.

I get the same error with firefox 60.1 ESR.

I have manually installed 60.0.2 and disabled updates temporarilly to workaround this but would like a forward looking solution.

OK, I updated to Flash 30.0.0.113. I retried firefox 61 but it still gives the same missing symbol in dbus. Flash now works OK though - thanks.

There were several crash dumps, all similar, relating to flash 28. What is the current profile name?

This can possibly happen if there are uncommon characters in the profile name.

  • Bug 1420124 - Check profile name before use them at DBus strings

You can create a new profile to test if your current profile is causing the problem.

See "Creating a profile":

If the new profile works then you can transfer files from a previously used profile to the new profile, but be cautious not to copy corrupted files to avoid carrying over problems.

Thanks for the suggestion but unfortunately it had no effect. The firefox v61 profile manager starts OK and creates a new profile but when I exit the manager and start the browser with the new profile I see the same undefined symbol error.

If I grep in libdbus for the dynamic symbol it comes up empty:

  • Bulleted list itemnm -D /lib/i386-linux-gnu/libdbus-1.so.3 |grep validate_bus_name

But if I grep libxul it shows dbus_validate_bus_name as an unresolved import.

This looks like firefox 61 needs a different (later) libdbus. This is a logic problem in firefox 61 which should be dynamically loading the dbus library and resolving the entry point at runtime. Either that or the version 61 system requirements are wrong.

Hi, where did you download from ? Some times who ever has it on website screws up. You can always try one from here if it does what it is suppose to for your flavour.

Thanks for help but still the same problem no matter what version I choose.

This is a libxul build problem. Beginning with v61 it imports dbus_validate_bus_name which is not available in the libdbus from Ubuntu 12.04 :-( This is a significant step to drop support for this OS. I have tried with an Ubuntu 14.04 LTS VM and that works OK.
