How can I change the Thunderbird opening screen to something more useful?

The left-hand pane lists my email addresses, but the right-hand pane displays "Thunderbird Mail - JJJoseph@xyz.com" which is not at all useful.

At one time the right-hand pane would display the incoming mail so that I could get to work promptly. The new pane layout is tedious to work with since I have to select "Read Messages" and wait for the fresh mail to display. This I must do for every email address and I'm about ready to strangle Thunderbird. If done right, Thunderbird is much sweeter to use than gmail, so I'm hoping it doesn't end up in the dumpster from neglect!

Mine generally wakes up showing what it showed when last closed. I'm not sure how you make it do anything different.

I use an add-on called Mail Summaries which changes that display, but this wouldn't answer your wish to go straight into the mail list.

Maybe Tools|Options|General has a setting for this...
