I have 50 40M each places.sqlite files. Can I delete the old ones and stop firefox from saving files older than the most recent, while still retaining history?
Thank you.

That is quite a lot.
Are those files all in the same Firefox profile folder?
Do they have the places.sqlite name or is there something appended?
You only need one of them and that is the file that Firefox currently uses to store the history and bookmarks.
You can check for problems with the places.sqlite database file in the Firefox profile folder.
