If Firefox is not my default browser do I have to sign in every time I use it ?

I like Firefox but Google Chrome is my default browser. When I do go to Firefox I have to sign in . This is annoying. Even if I just quit browsing I have to sign in again when I come back. I also have to sign in again on my favorite sites.

Websites remembering you and automatically log you on is stored in a cookie.
Cookies can expire, so it is possible that you need to log in again if you haven't accessed that site for some time.

You can create an allow cookie exception (Tools > Options > Privacy > Cookies: Exceptions) to keep such a cookie.
