Will Firefox 57 ever allow manual entry of usernames/passwords?

I'd been using a password-manager add-on in previous versions of Firefox. This manager allowed me manually to add usernames and passwords (for when a login page didn't generate the prompt to save, or if the login info was for something other than a web page).

In Firefox 57, that password-manager is labeled "Legacy" and is disabled. Besides making password retrieval a much more cumbersome process, the change also means that I can no longer manually add username/password pairs.

Is there any likelihood of Mozilla restoring utility in this area, or is it maybe time for me to consider Chrome?

Thank you!

Because logins are a security sensitive area of the browser, the process of providing extensions access to them is going slowly. There is an "experimental" logins API that developers can play with, but no timetable for adding it to an actual Firefox release. Maybe by next Summer??

Meanwhile, have you considered a cross-browser, cloud-based alternative to a browser-by-browser approach? One product that is getting a lot of buzz recently, probably because it's free (as in beer) and open source, and because LastPass had so many problems with updating its extension, is:

https://bitwarden.com/

I haven't tried it myself.

Note that you can edit username and password fields by double-clicking such a field or via the right-click context menu in the Password Manager. It is only no longer possible to add a name/password entry in cases where the website doesn't offer this (no key icon in address bar).

@jscher2000: The cloud-based password utilities require that one be (able to go) online for one's passwords. I'd rather have something local. I may end up having to get a stand-alone password manager, but this seems to me to be overkill, considering how simple this process used to be. :-(

@cor-el: Yes, one can edit what already exists. And no, one currently cannot add something new. I am asking if Mozilla has any plans to restore this functionality.

Thank you!

Have you tried something like LastPass or KeePass? I use KeePass and it helps to remember all the password and sites and it helps to enter logins and passwords so I don't have to remember on sites.
