Typeing a letter-I click on 'insert' at end of sentence and get 2 spaces instead of one
The same thing when I end my letter. I type 'insert' to go to the next line and I get a space and then my next line.

Sounds like you are using 'Paragraph' instead of 'Body Text'.
Perhaps this is auto selected because it is set up in Options.
To switch this off: see image below as aid. 'Menu icon' > 'Options' > 'Options' > 'Composition' > 'General' tab uncheck: 'when using paragraph format, the enter key creates a new paragraph' click on OK
If you had a Write window already open before making the changes, the changes will not show., but they will in the next 'Write ' message you open.
