Are you talking about moving a few marks manually, or mass sorting?

Places Maintenance {web link} Allows to run Maintenance tasks on the database that drives Places, the bookmarks and history module behind Firefox.

Open the Add-ons Manager. Locate the add-on and press the Options button. Then follow the directions.

Note: Some software, like Advanced SystemCare with Surfing Protection, can protect files in the Firefox profile folder against changes. If you have such software then check the settings or uninstall this software.

manually sort. when i open bookmarks (top left corner of my screen) and my bookmarks appear, I just want to manually sort them.

I think you opened the sidebar. Open the main Bookmarks Manager <Control><Shift> B

If you are trying to use the right-click > Sort by Name feature, that works on folders. To sort the main level of the Bookmarks Menu by name, you need to use either the

  • Library dialog
    • Ctrl+Shift+b or
    • "Show All Bookmarks"
  • Bookmarks Sidebar
    • Ctrl+b or
    • bookmarks menu button > View Bookmarks Sidebar

and right-click the wording Bookmarks Menu to sort that level.

But if you meant dragging/dropping bookmarks to a different position, it should work, but it might be easier using the Library dialog.

What happens when you try? Does the bookmark move but jumps back? Does it move, stay put, but jump back when you close/open Firefox?

Start Firefox in Safe Mode {web Link} by holding down the <Shift>
(Mac=Options)
key, and then starting Firefox. A small dialog should appear. Click Start In Safe Mode (not Refresh).

Is the problem still there?
