Have installed "ImportExport" addon and tried to open eM Client email files exported to desktop. No go. They are possibly in wrong format as the "addon" doesn't recognise them. Have also exported "settings" and "Contacts" to desktop.

em client can import from most other mail file types, but if you want to get out, they only export to .eml files with one file for every email. So make sure you export the em client emails in .eml format.

Create folder on desktop to receive .eml files.

In Thunderbird In Local Folder, Create folder to receive emails or use the Inbox

Right click on eg: Inbox and select 'Importexporttool > Import messages locate folder on desktop with the .eml files. Select the eml files and click on Open.
