Can one recover closed tabs? (Is there a history of what was last open?)

I had lots of e-mails as tabs to reply later. I did this to find them easily later. I lost the tabs because I opened Sent Items in a new window, did some work, then closed Inbox plus open tabs. Lastly I closed Sent Items and Thunderbird. In other words, I closed Thunderbird from Sent Items instead of from Inbox plus tabs. When I next opened Thunderbird, the tabs of Inbox messages were gone.

The closest support entry I can find Matt's suggestion to use tags instead. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1040760. In this case, the tabs disappeared for no apparent reason.
Is there any form of history of what tabs I had open? Any way to recover these same messages?

You already know about all I can offer, but to add. The file that holds the tabs information is called session.json. There a myriad reasons this information gets lost, not the least is occasionally I think Thunderbird corrupts it itself. But other time external optimization programs delete it bottom line is that the developers do not place a high value on being ab le to restore a previous session as Firefox does.
