Recently I made a bookmarkbackup, which automatically got a json extension. After renitizialising my laptop and reinstalling Firefox I wanted to import this file, but Firefox seems to only allow importing HTML files, apparently. How does this happen and, more importantly: how can I fix this ?!?!?!?!

Sorry, it's a naming convention, and you should find both on the same menu:

  • Backup (JSON) => Restore
  • Export (HTML) => Import

Please note that restoring a JSON backup completely replaces the existing set of bookmarks.

Another thing to be aware of: Restoring a JSON file will replace bookmarks that are already in the Profile that you are restoring to. Whereas, an HTML file that is imported will append (or add to) existing bookmarks.

If you already have created bookmarks that you want to keep then you need to export the current bookmarks to an HTML file before restoring the JSON backup as that will wipe existing bookmarks. Then you can import the HTML backup to merge these bookmarks.
