High CPU usage by Firefox Web Content process

Hello,

since a few weeks (maybe 4) I have issues with Firefox needing a lot of CPU (up to >100%). It doesn't slow down the computer, but the fan is active at most times. Especially when I am opening websites with videos or pictures on them or have many tabs open – which is my normal way of working.

In the activity monitor I can see two processes: Firefox and Firefox Web Content, with the latter needing about twice as much CPU as the other.

I have disabled the two Add-Ons I used, which didn't change anything. I have no extensions or themes in use. The Firefox version is 53.0.3 on Mac OS 10.11.6 (El Capitan) on a Mac Book Air.

I attached a PDF of the activity monitor in which you can see the CPU-usage and the CPU-time of the processes running right now. As you can see Firefox wins the race for CPU-time.

Any help is greatly appreciated!

Wiebke

PS: another recent bug which is a bit annoying is that a tab is spontaneously opened in a new window ever now and then.
