I can't open a Word attachment on my Mac

I am running on Mac OSX 10.6.6 I just installed Office for Mac 2011 and uninstalled Office 2008. Now I can't open a Word (or Excel for that matter) attachment in Firefox. I get an error message that says that the document "could not be opened, because an unknown error occurred).

I've already tried redirecting Safari (and closing it); changing the Firefox download location, clearing my download cache, resetting my browser etc... I can't help but wonder if this stems from deleting Word 2008. The file I'm trying to open is a file created in 2008. I've had no problem opening files on my hard drive, I just can't open attachments. Any ideas?
