email links won't open in firefox

I am using Mac OS 10.6.6 and Firefox 3.6.14. When I make Firefox my default browser and click on an email link (using MacMail 4.4), the mail program switches over to Firefox to an already open window but does not open a new window or the link. When I make Safari my default browser and click on the link in my mail program, the link opens up with no problem in Safari. So, I have tried going back and making Firefox the default browser again and still, no window opens. Any ideas?
