I am running firefox 3.6.8 on a P4 desktop, and this 'problem' has existed through several updates of firefox. The gmail ikon usually appears in the toolbar. Sometimes GMAIL appears with the other Google destinations like web, news, maps etc., as well as in the toolbar. When the toolbar display only occurs, gmail displays when new mail arrives. When both display the toolbar ikon may or may not work.
