Now, I've used SYNC successfully for YEARS on my computers. But my account was never tied to an email address (it is now). Once I set it up, however, the browser on the android phone gives the red bar saying "Could not sign in" when I try to sign in.

If you have had Sync for ages you likely have an older Sync account. You will need to upgrade to be able to use the New Sync. See https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/how-to-update-to-the-new-firefox-sync

The "(it is now)" part of my question was there BECAUSE I did go through setting up the New Sync account, which I did because the mobile FireFox sync required it. I have successfully sync'd with my NEW account on my PC's and laptops, but the phone still gives the error message.

I also ought to point out that if I try to CREATE a new account using the mobile client, I get a RED bar with "Could not create account" as an error. I tried this method figuring if I could get the mobile client connected, I could get the PC's shifted over to that account without a problem.

The problem is COMPLETELY with the mobile client.

This is on a HTC One running Android 4.4.2
