I think Hangouts are a Google service. Google is constantly playing around with its pages, so you may see something experimental that others don't see. Sometimes you can opt out of unusual interfaces by clearing all your Google cookies. This will have the effect of logging you out, so make sure to save any work in progress first.

While viewing a page on the site, either:

  • right-click and choose View Page Info > Security > "View Cookies"
  • Alt+t (open the classic Tools menu) > Page Info > Security > "View Cookies"

In the dialog that opens, you can remove your Google cookies individually.

Then try reloading the page. Any difference?
