I am running the latest Firefox on Windows 7 x64 Ultimate.

I have no plug-ins or extensions installed (Flash, Java etc have all been uninstalled from the system) I have deleted and recreated the profile many times. I have uninstalled and reinstalled Firefox many times. I tried Firefox in Safe-Mode and had the exact problems. I tried the “Reset Firefox” from the Troubleshooting Information option. I disabled my Anti-Virus program, Microsoft Security Essentials and made difference.

The only way I have found Firefox to work perfectly is when I open it via “Run as administrator” but this is extremely unsafe.

I believe the problem started when I installed Internet Explorer 10. I have uninstalled it and also the extra updates it installs during setup.

The clue to the problem has to be in the fact that it runs perfectly when opened via “Run as administrator”

Any help solving this issue would be appreciated.

Try Firefox Safe Mode to see if the problem goes away. Safe Mode is a troubleshooting mode, which disables most add-ons.

(If you're not using it, switch to the Default theme.)

  • You can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by holding the Shift key when you open the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
  • Or open the Help menu and click on the Restart with Add-ons Disabled... menu item while Firefox is running.

Once you get the pop-up, just select "'Start in Safe Mode"

If the issue is not present in Firefox Safe Mode, your problem is probably caused by an extension, and you need to figure out which one. Please follow the Troubleshoot extensions, themes and hardware acceleration issues to solve common Firefox problems article for that.

To exit the Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before opening Firefox for normal use again.

When you figure out what's causing your issues, please let us know. It might help other users who have the same problem.

hey akashi, can you upgrade your firefox and check it once . goto help->about firefox and upgrade it to ff20.

Try to boot the computer in Windows Safe mode with network support (press F8 on the boot screen) as a test to see if that helps.

A possible cause is security software (firewall,anti-virus) that blocks or restricts Firefox or the plugin-container process without informing you, possibly after detecting changes (update) to the Firefox program.

Remove all rules for Firefox and the plugin-container from the permissions list in the firewall and let your firewall ask again for permission to get full unrestricted access to internet for Firefox and the plugin-container process and the updater process.

Do a clean reinstall and delete the Firefox program folder before reinstalling a fresh copy of Firefox.

Download a fresh Firefox copy and save the file to the desktop.

Uninstall your current Firefox version, if possible, to cleanup the Windows registry and settings in security software.

  • Do NOT remove personal data when you uninstall your current Firefox version, because all profile folders will be removed and you will also lose your personal data like bookmarks and passwords from profiles of other Firefox versions.

Remove the Firefox program folder before installing that newly downloaded copy of the Firefox installer.

Your bookmarks and other profile data are stored in the Firefox Profile Folder and won't be affected by an uninstall and (re)install, but make sure that "remove personal data" is NOT selected when you uninstall Firefox.

If you keep having problems then also create a new profile.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I tried booting Windows 7 into Safe Mode with networking. Firefox still had the same problems.

I am also using the very latest version, 20.0.1

Any other ideas I can try? Thanks.
