Hi Gordon, it sounds like the page encoding doesn't support accented characters in the current font. The most common encoding for pages on the web are UTF-8 and Windows-1252, and some fonts might only work properly in one of the two systems.

Do you have this problem on all sites -- even dead simple ones like this one -- or do you notice it with particular text editors?

And in case it's relevant, how are you entering é ? For example:

  • Physical keyboard (for example, a shifted key or sequence of keys)
  • On-screen keyboard
  • Holding down Alt and dialing 0233 on the number pad
  • The site "auto corrects" a word like touche to touché
  • Something else, like a text replacement add-on

Note that you see Touché instead of the actual Unicode character if you paste Unicode on a webpage that is displayed as an eight bit encoding.
