Hello Ladies and Gentlemen, I am sorry to have to go to such lengths to figure out how I can fix this error. Today I opened up Firefox to watch some simple youtube videos, then I come to realization that all my bookmarks I have are gone. I quickly check up on them to find out that they are still there, which was a relief for me. I searched through multiple different problems and solutions, but none of them worked for me I can try to send you an image of what has now become of my bookmark toolbar. I tried restoring the defaults, as well as restarting my PC, or checking if I have the toolbar visible. I sincerely hope you can help me fix my problem.

Yours sincerely, Oliver Wiechert

If you use Sync then best is to disconnect Sync temporarily during troubleshooting.

This could be a problem with the places.sqlite and favicons.sqlite files in the Firefox profile folder.

  • use the "Places Database" -> "Verify Integrity" button on the "Help -> More Troubleshooting Information" (about:support) page

If errors are reported with "Verify Integrity", close and restart Firefox or reboot and retry.

If "Verify Integrity" cannot repair places.sqlite, rename/remove all places.sqlite and favicons.sqlite files in the Firefox profile folder with Firefox closed. Firefox will rebuild places.sqlite and restore the bookmarks from the most recent JSON backup in the bookmarkbackups folder.

  • keep a backup copy of places.sqlite in case a new places.sqlite database has to be created
  • you lose the history when a new places.sqlite is created

You may have to restore an older bookmarks backup in the bookmarkbackups folder via the Bookmarks Manager (Library).

You can use the button on the "Help -> More Troubleshooting Information" (about:support) page to go to the current Firefox profile folder or use the about:profiles page (Root directory).

You can post an image here. Look just below the text box.

I'm not sure what you are describing, so a screenshot might help.

Ah yes, I am sorry. I tried to do that the first time but it didn't load.

Well, if you right-click in blank area of the address bar you will get a context menu that lets you display the Menu Bar if you want to see the Bookmarks menu and also a Bookmarks Toolbar sub-menu which has an Always Show option.

Hi Oliver, it sounds like you already followed the basic advice of:

  • Open Customize and check that "Bookmarks Toolbar Items" appears at the left end of that blank bar (and consider removing any other controls on the bar in case there is a crowding problem)
  • If that doesn't help, use the Restore Defaults button at the bottom of the Customize screen

You may also want to check that the missing bookmarks are listed under Bookmarks Toolbar in the Bookmarks Sidebar (Ctrl+B) or on the drop-down menu (Alt+B > Bookmarks Toolbar flyout).
