Trouble with video downloader.
Hello all, I have been trying to download a video from YouTube. It runs for over an hour. When clicking on the grapes at the top RHS I get a load of options which I don't understand like wmv,mp4 etc. The times given go from a few Kb to 29Mb which is more realistic for what I want to download. I can't understand why you would only want to download a few Kb of a long video.
Of all the options given which one is the correct one to download what I am watching on the screen? I did get it to record for about 10 minutes then the whole computer just crashed out and shut down. Why? I have also downloaded the odd short video but there is no sound. Other times I get a download symbol in the downloads folder but it's empty and I can't delete it. To play videos I am using VLC.
I am not having much luck with this and I need help please. By the way, please keep replies basic as I am not a computer expert.

How are you downloading from YouTube?
I use: This Is ONLY A PC App https://www.dvdvideosoft.com/products/dvd/Free-YouTube-Download.htm Use this YouTube downloader to get single videos and complete playlists, show list, charts and user channels from YouTube. Convert to AVI, MP3, WMV.

That is the kind of format the clip is created.
Many thanks Fred for the replies, When I click on the grapes at the top RHS of the screen to open the Helper, why are there so many options and file sizes offered for the same video? Of those options which would be the best choice? My VLC will play most things I think. I have also got Windows Media Player. All I am trying to do is download a YouTube video using the simplest method to my Downloads folder. I'll have a go with the Videosoft and see what happens.
As to the type of downloads (avi mp4 mov . . .) you need to decide what is best for you and your system.
For me, I choose mp4. The Windows file explorer can display the length(minutes) of the clip(in most cases). Some file types are longer/shorter than others(bytes).
Take a look at the YouTube downloader I spoke of above.
